This debate held between the friar Bartolomé de las Casas and the treatise writer Ginés de Sepúlveda during the first decades of the sixteenth century, on Indian rational capacity and the integration of Indians into the Christian congregation, became a referent both in Spanish colonies and in French and English possessions. Local an regional circumstances determined the way in which each nation undertook its civilizational and evangelical activities.Este  trabajo analiza la reflexión que se dio en las colonias americanas sobre la naturaleza de los pueblos originarios de América y sus derechos. Tanto en las posesiones españolas, como en las francesas e inglesas, se tomó como referente la polémica sostenida en las primeras décadas del siglo XVI entre el fraile Las Casas y el tratadista Ginés de Sepúlveda sobre la capacidad racional del indio y sobre cómo éste debía ser integrado a la grey cristiana.
