The PAHs were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection. An increase in the sum of 13 PAHs was observed at all sampling stations in April 2003 relative to a previous survey carried out in October 2000, and the most affected sites were Castro-Urdiales (Cantabria) and Igueldo. In June 2003, a decrease in PAH levels was observed at Avilés (Asturias) and Castro-Urdiales, compared with the April survey, while a small increase was recorded at Igueldo and Bilbao-Azcorri (Basque Country), possibly due to the late arrival of small fuel slicks.Se estudiaron las concentraciones de hidrocarburos aromáticos policíclicos (HAPs) en mejillón silvestre (Mytilus galloprovincialis) de la costa cantábrica después del vertido producido por el B/T Prestige. Se realizaron dos muestreos, uno en abril y otro en junio de 2003, en cinco estaciones de la zona intermareal desde Luarca (Asturias) a Igueldo (País Vasco). Los HAPs fueron cuantificados por cromatografía líquida de alta resolución (HPLC) con detección fluorimétrica. En todas las estaciones se observó un aumento en la suma de los 13 HAPs en abril de 2003 respecto a un muestreo previo realizado en octubre de 2000, destacando Castro-Urdiales (Cantabria) e Igueldo como los puntos más afectados.
