Sumario:Biofilm formation was observed on the components of the experimental dynamic system and on admiralty coupons (70Cu30Ni).The content of bacteria populations in test water wassimilar to that commonly found (10 6 10 7 colony forming units per mL) in the cooling water systems of Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE). Biofilm and bacteria were treated employing reduced levels of chlorine combined with electrolytically generated silver and copper ions. The results clearly showed evidence of microbiologically influenced corrosion on the coupons. The disinfectant systems of silver/copper and silver/copper/chlorine have shown to lower the aggressivity of bacteria populations that promote microbiologicallyinfluenced corrosion and biofilm formation to levels that compete with the use of high concentrations of chlorine (4 ppm) for the treatment of cooling tower systems, thus thosesystems are an option to diminish the environmental impact of chlorine.
