Sumario:A decline of sperm parameters and an increase in testicular cancer, hypospadias and cryptorchidism have been registered in the last 50 years. Environmental human exposure to phthalate esters is one of the suspected factors that cause these changes. The phthalate esters are used in plastics, paints, pesticides, packing materials and medical devices. When administered to male rats, results show a decrease in testicular weight and severe testicular atrophy with desquamation of the germinal epithelium in semniferous tubules. Prepubertal exposure to these compounds causes serious testicular changes in adult animals. Prenatal exposure influences the occurrence of undescended testes. Sertoli cells were identified as the target of the action of phthalate esters. Zinc delivery, changes in enzyme activity, hormonal disturbance and impairment of apoptosis regulation originated by pfthalate esters are discussed as the factors that can induce testicular atrophy.
