This essay seeks to provide elements to understand the transition from indirect election and limited voting rights given to citizens who met certain characteristics to direct election and a universal vote. Finally, this article attempts to contribute to the reflections about the evolution of these rights. It is through a historical-electoral approach that one has the opportunity to assess the national advancement related of suffrage, which has allowed the stability and respect of popular sovereignty, based on a universal, free and secret vote from the citizens and their inalienable right to be elected for office.
