Yet the necessary conceptual precision is sadly missing from that talk, at least in the author’s experience. Students in particular suffer from this state of affairs. The present paper has been written as a contribution to alleviate the problem, first of all by making the term ‘theory’ as precise as possible, and then by briefly describing the misunderstandings and the faults of exposition consequent upon conceptual imprecision.La palabra “teoría” y las expresiones asociadas a ella (p. ej. “concepto teórico”, “marco teórico”, “argumento teórico”, “discusión teórica”) crean demasiada confusión en los textos que proyectan o reportan investigaciones en ciencias sociales. Esto se debe a una falta de comprensión de lo que es una teoría, lo que hace y cómo funciona. De esa manera, siempre que los investigadores se ven llamados a escribir sobre teoría, producen exposiciones opacas y torpes, repletas de jerga y citas inútiles de autores clásicos o de moda.
