Descripción
Sumario:This work talks about an accusation of witchcraft made in 1704 by Opata Indians of the Bacerac Mission (Sonora) against don Marcos Humuta, who was the governor and captain general in that Mission. It shows that his government activities —tied with colonial administration interests— kept him apart from the traditional values of his subordinates to the point that he was seen as a menace to the community. In this context, the ruling of witchcraft is considered as a resource of the Opatas in order to induce the destitution and the exile of Marcos from the Bacerac Mission.
