Resumo:The current study took place at the highland plateau of San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The aim was evlauating some ecological processes (blood and feather metal concentrations, relative abundances, survival, and ecological stress) in three passerine birds, and in some organisms that sustain interspecific relations with these birds (potential prey and blood parasites), and the effect of exposure to metals from mining activities on these processes. In order to fulfill the study objectives, soil samples were obtained, and arthropods, as well as birds were captured. Bird blood and feather samples were taken, and all specimens were banded with ornithological rings. The study sites represent a gradient of exposure to minning activity and two habitat types with different degrees of disturbance (Yucca-dominated scrublands vs villages) at a semi-arid region. The following parameters were quantified: As, Cd, Pb, and Sb concentrations in all sampled matrices, percentage of birds parasitized by haemosporidians, intensity of parasitism, ecological stress evaluated through the heterophyl-lymphocyte proportion, bird relative abundances for each species, and survival rates. Finally, the relationships among the analized parameters were evaluated through the study gradients. The results suggest that metal concentrations increase in all matrices in sites that are exposed to mining activity. Prevalence and parasitism intensity were independent of degree of exposure to metals, possibly due to the fact that both vectors and parasites, not only birds, are affected by metal exposure. In general, ecological stress was greater in exposed sites, but not in all species, thus reflecting differing responses among bird species. Relative abundances were unrelated to metal exposure, but responded to habitat type according to the habits of each species. Finally, effects on survival of exposure and/or habitat type were not significant, possibly due to the low recapture rates.
