Sumario:Soil as a resourse is of prime importance in the natural environment from which the Mazahua peasant population obtain their basic product for survivaal: corn.For the classification of  the Jñatjo soil qualities the (emic) criteria which the native population uses to guide its agricultural activities were considered; that is, their own soil classification which takes into account not only color, texture,and bumidity, but also has room for mythology, temperature, and dua loppositions.One a regional level the soils existing between the highest part ofthe Jocotitlan Volcano, in the State of México, andt he lower  part of it were considered, obtaining in this way three classes according to altilude: mountain soil, highland soil and plains soil.Ta each one of these types of soil corresponds a particular type ofcorn seeds which goes with certain environmental and culturalconditions, a specific family cycle and a proper taste in food.
