The basic characteristics of employment in this sector are labor irregularity and underemployment. The pinch of the orange, the activity that concentrates the bulk of labor demand, is characterized by the alternation of short periods of over-work with long periods of inactivity. The cuadrilla is the cell of the labor organization of the orange pickers. The crew is not just a group of day laborers who work together. The permanent situation of socio-labor instability means that strong solidarity networks are woven within the group, which helps to alleviate the most dramatic situations. This work, through a qualitative methodology, analyzes the social function performed by the squad in a framework where the worker lacks social protection networks.En la zona centro de Tamaulipas el cultivo de cítricos, la producción dominante, da empleo a más de cinco mil jornaleros anualmente. Las características básicas del empleo en este sector son la irregularidad laboral y el subempleo. La pizca de la naranja, la actividad que concentra el grueso de la demanda laboral, se caracteriza por la alternancia de cortos periodos de sobre-trabajo con largos periodos de inactividad. La cuadrilla es la célula de la organización laboral de los pizcadores de naranja. La cuadrilla no es únicamente un grupo de jornaleros que trabajan juntos. La situación permanente de inestabilidad sociolaboral hace que dentro de la cuadrilla aparezcan tejidas fuertes redes de solidaridad, que contribuyen a paliar las situaciones más dramáticas.
