Resumo:This essay shows that when banks operate under conditions of oligopolistic competition and with asymmetrical expectations regarding its clients, the liberalization of interest rates can frustrate its aims. Such a policy will probably lead to a reduction of interest rates on bank deposits, an increase in intermediation margins and a greater degree of credit rationing.
