Descrição
Resumo:This article is the response to a work published in 2019 by Michel Oudijk, in which he criticizes research by Michel Graulich and Alfredo López Austin. It includes argumentation on the semiotic passage of lexical  and visual elements from one genre of expression to another, specifically those derived from the mantic genre. It also analyzes the value of historical documentary sources and the historian’s attitude towards them, mainly when greater deformation is suspected, by focusing on the work carried out by the two  above-mentioned researchers. The article reviews the paradigm(s) criticized by Oudijk and explains its (their) genesis and development. Since Oudijk’s criticism is centered on López Austin’s proposals regarding the cosmic structure and mechanism, emphasis is placed on the Mesoamerican conception of the cosmos as machinery and the functions of cosmic trees, in particular through an interpretation of the symbolic values of their representations.
