Results show that the occurrence of current suicidal ideation was 8.4% (n=  274), with a significantly higher proportion of women (x2= 4.22; gl= 1; p= 0.033). Frequency of suicide attempts was 12.4%. The most frequent methods often used were drug poisoning and not eating, to dying. The main reasons cited were family problems, feeling angry, feeling alone/sad/depressed, and lack of understanding in the family. There were statistical differences by sex.El objetivo del presente artículo es medir la frecuencia de ideación suicida reciente y tentativas suicidas por lo menos alguna vez en la vida, considerando el sexo y la edad, para describir las características de la única/última tentativa en estudiantes de secundaria. Se realizó un estudio transversal con una muestra aleatoria de escuelas secundarias públicas de 41 de los 46 municipios que integran el estado de Guanajuato, México. Participaron 3249 estudiantes (48.6% hombres y 51.4% mujeres), de una edad promedio de 13 años. Los resultados evidencian que la ocurrencia de ideación suicida actual fue de 8.4% (n= 274), con una proporción significativamente mayor de mujeres (x2= 4.22; gl= 1; p= 0.033); la frecuencia de tentativas suicidas alguna vez en la vida fue de 12.4%. Los métodos que se emplearon con mayor frecuencia fueron la intoxicación con drogas y no comer, con el fin de morir. Los principales motivos mencionados fueron problemas familiares, sentirse enojado, sentirse triste, solo, deprimido e incomprendido por la familia.
