Descripción
Sumario:43.7 % of the groundwater wells that provide drinking water for the state of Aguascalientes show fluoride concentrations above 1.5 mg/L. The objective of our research was to perform a risk analysis study to estimate the health implicationsof fluoride exposure through drinking water in Aguascalientes. Fluoride exposure doses were calculated for local population in each of the state municipalities. These estimates were compared with the ingestion limits set by the US Agency for Toxic Substances and Diseases Registry (ATSDR). Based on the existing literature the expected prevalences of dental fluorosis for the exposed people were calculated. Our results show that there is a significant health risk for the people of Aguascalientes, paticularly children. This study provides the necessary grounds to estimate the dimension of the public health problem caused by excessive fluoride ingestion in Aguascalientes.
