| Summary: | The ketogenic diet is defined as a diet high in lipids, adequate in protein and low in carbohydrates that causes ketosis. During fasting, the human body metabolizes fat deposits and fatty acids through beta-oxidation through lipolysis, giving rise to acetoacetic acid, beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetone-ketone bodies. In this way, cells can use them as precursors and generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The ketogenic diet stimulates the metabolic effects of fasting, forcing the human body to use fat as an energy source. |
