Or, in Servando Teresa de Mier's words: what had to be done so that a group of individuals could be recognized by the heads of the military and obeyed by the people? The main political actors soon realized that any option would be disputable.  Our paper examines this phenomenon during the process of Independence. Juntas, congresses and governments would always be liable to questioning. The return of Ferdinand VII to the throne and his incapacity to restore the pre-1808 order proved that there was no turning back the process of debating the political order.Las “renuncias” de Bayona, por medio de las cuales Carlos IV cedía sus dominios a Bonaparte, ocasionaron un problema mayúsculo a los habitantes de la Nueva  España y de los demás territorios hispánicos: ¿quién debía hacerse cargo del gobierno? o, en los términos de Servando Teresa de Mier, ¿cómo hacer que un grupo de personas  fuera reconocido por los jefes militares y obedecido  por los pueblos?  Los principales  actores políticos  se enteraron muy pronto de que ninguna opción sería indiscutible. Este artículo aborda este fenómeno en el periodo del proceso de independencia. Las juntas, los congresos,  los gobiernos siempre podrían ser cuestionados.
