On the one hand we find those who assume it is a kinship organization, while on the other, there are those who regard it is a political-administrative unit. In this essay we propose, based on ethnographic information, that the calpulli is an aspect of the broader theme of social organization among Mesoamerican communities, in which there is a profound relationship with agricultural work, kinship, and worldview.
