description The article discusses the first years of exploitation of Vaca Muerta (2012-2019) in the Patagonia Argentina. Its goal is to illustrate the workings of the non-conventional hydrocarbon model and to describe the main trends that enabled its development. To do this, we put it within the framework of the exploitation of extreme energies of the neoliberal period, which affected most countries in the region. Subsequently, we study important topics that were identified on this issue: the government’s discourse to pursue the fracking idea within a highly hostile environment; the fracking impact on the environment and society, and the government’s sellout both legally and economically. This analysis is made possible through a conjunction of various research techniques that include reviewing national newspapers, looking at government archives and other forms political ecology analysis.
