A chemical analysis of the sampling sites was performed to determine the degree and nature of contamination. Salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen were controlled throughout the laboratory exposure. On day 21, the concentrations of different metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Hg and As) were analyzed in gill tissues and in sediments. The results showed that bioaccumulation of Zn (975.50 mg kg–1) in the organisms was associated with the enrichment of this metal in the Guadalquivir Estuary after the Aznalcóllar mining spill (April 1998), while bioaccumulation of Cu (548.90 mg kg–1) showed different trends that are associated with other sources of contamination, such as the chronic spill of acidic waters in Huelva Ria. Relationships were observed between metal content in sediments and metal content in gill tissues through the biota-sediment accumulation factor. This relationship validates the use of bioaccumulation measurements to evaluate the bioavailability of metals in contaminated sediments.Se utilizaron hembras del cangrejo Carcinus maenas en estado de intermuda para evaluar la biodisponibilidad de metales en los sedimentos de tres estuarios españoles. Los organismos se expusieron a diferentes sedimentos en acuarios de cristal por replicado durante 21 días. Se llevó a cabo un análisis químico de los puntos de muestreo con el fin de determinar el grado y naturaleza de la contaminación. Durante toda la exposición en el laboratorio se controlaron salinidad, pH y contenido de oxígeno disuelto. El día 21 se determinaron las concentraciones de los diferentes metales (Cu, Zn, Pb, Hg y As) en tejido de branquia y en el sedimento. Los resultados mostraron una asociación entre la bioacumulación de Zn (975.50 mg kg–1) en los organismos y el enriquecimiento de este metal en el Estuario del Guadalquivir después del accidente minero de Aznalcóllar (abril de 1998). Sin embargo, la bioacumulación de Cu (548.90 mg kg–1) mostró diferentes tendencias relacionadas con otras fuentes como el vertido crónico de aguas ácidas en la Ría de Huelva. Se observaron relaciones entre el contenido de metal en el sedimento y en el tejido de branquia a través del Factor de Acumulación Biota-Sedimento (BSAF).
