Among the methods used for water quality monitoring in freshwater ecosystems we can find the phytotoxicity assessment and the seed germination and root elongation tests, which are the simplest methods recommended for environmental biomonitoring. The aims of this study were to assess the water toxicity of the Chalma river by the use of a bioassay with Lactuca sativa and to elaborate a biological index to diminish the water pollution condition of this river. Six study sites along the river were chosen, four of them located in the state of Mexico and two in the state of Morelos. The results were analyzed with multivariate methods: a principal component analysis and a similarity analysis. Three zones were differentiated according to the toxicity indices obtained: 1) the first three study sites showed positive values and low toxicity with high concentrations of nutrients, which could be promoting radical elongation, 2) the middle portion, represented only by the fourth study site, exhibited the lowest value of the root length index, with a classification of moderate toxicity and 3) the lower portion of the river, whose indices classified this zone as moderate to low toxicity. The last portion of the river was also associated with the accumulation of leachate compounds during the rainy season. Finally, the indices obtained showed that the sensitivity of the Lactuca sativa seeds bioassay generated an integral biological response. This information can be used for ecotoxicological risk assessment. |

This information can be used for ecotoxicological risk assessment.Entre los métodos utilizados en el monitoreo de la calidad de agua en los ecosistemas dulceacuícolas encontramos el de evaluación de fitotoxicidad, el de germinación de semillas y la prueba de la elongación radical, que son de los más simples y recomendados para el biomonitoreo ambiental. Los objetivos de este trabajo consistieron en evaluar la toxicidad de las aguas del Río Chalma a través de un bioensayo con Lactuca sativa y establecer un índice biológico que permita conocer y evaluar las condiciones de contaminación del agua de este río. Se eligieron seis sitios de monitoreo representativos a lo largo del cauce, cuatro de ellos ubicados en el Estado de México y dos en el estado de Morelos. Los resultados se analizaron con métodos multivariados: un análisis de componentes principales y uno de similitud. Se diferenciaron tres zonas de acuerdo con los índices de toxicidad obtenidos: 1) los tres primeros sitios de estudio presentaron valores positivos y bajos en toxicidad, con altas concentraciones de nutrientes, que podrían estar promoviendo la elongación radical, 2) la parte media representada por el cuarto sitio, obtuvo el índice de elongación radical más bajo, lo que clasificó a este sitio en la categoría de toxicidad moderada y 3) la parte baja del río, cuyos índices clasificaron a esta zona con toxicidad de moderada a baja. Esta parte del río estuvo además asociada con la acumulación de compuestos lixiviados durante la época de lluvias. Finalmente, los índices obtenidos mostraron que la sensibilidad del bioensayo de germinación de las semillas de Lactuca sativa generó respuestas biológicas integradoras.
