Descripción
Sumario:The Mexican longline tuna fishery in the Gulf of Mexico is an important activity since the tunas caught in contrast to those obtained by the purse seine fishery are freely exported, so this activity represents an important source of foreign currency as it is destined for the market of United States in its fresh product presentation. Likewise and as a consequence, this activity promotes regional development by generating direct and indirect jobs. The first steps for the start of this fishery were in 1993, reaching a maximum of 2.07 million hooks in 2006, which progressively decreased to 1.81 million in 2008. The fishery is targeted at yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares; however, due to the characteristics of the fishing system, the catch is multispecific, so that other species classified as bycatch are obtained.
