Resumo:This paper considers the Mexican "consumer boom" of the late 1980s and early  990s in the theoretical context of the Post Keynesian literature on endogenous money. The consumer boom poses an apparent paradox: on the  one hand the rapid expansion of consumer lending during this period can be  described by some of the more powerful arguments in the endogenous money  literature. On the other hand, the Mexican state played a large role in creating  the conditions that provoked this expansion. In closing we point to an older  variety of Post Keynesian literature, exemplified by Juan Noyola, which allows us  to make the necessary political economy distinctions that more recent Post  Keynesian writings overlook.
