| Sumario: | The presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons associated to total suspended particles (TSP) and particles £ 10 μm (PM10) at Pedregal of San Angel area at Southwest Mexico Cityduring June to October (rainy season) and January to May and November and December (dry season) of 1993 was determined. The annual arithmetic means and the standard errors for TSP and PM10 were 109±10 μg/m 3 and 58±5 μg/m 3 , respectively. Both types of particles were higher in the dry season than in the rainy season. The percentage of relative humidity had negative correlation with both types of particles was calculated. Ten polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) contained in PM10 and TSP were determined. Benzo(ghi)perylene, indeno(1,2,3cd) pyrene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, dibenz(a,h)anthracene, benzo(a)pyrene and phenanthrene had the highest concentrations and they can be considered as PAH markers for this zone. Annual total amount of PAH was found higher in PM10 (11.6±4.8 ng/m 3 ) than in TSP (8.1±3.6 ng/m 3 ), significant difference was not present (p>0.6). PAH concentration adsorbed on PM10 was lower in dry season (6.8±0.9 vs. 16.3±2.6 ng/m 3 ) than in rainy season. While, PAH adsorbed on TSP were higher in dry (11.7±1.9 vs. 4.5±0.8 ng/m 3 ) than in rainy season. However, in both seasons the two kind of particles, did not show significant differences (p>0.5 and p>0.4, respectively). The different particle composition was probably responsible for the differences in organic compound amount adsorbed to them. In general, most PAH and the highest concentration were obtained with cyclohexane, followed by dichloromethane and acetone extracts. Results with Salmonella typhimurium strain TA98with and without S9 showed the presence of compounds with directand indirectmutagenic activity. The highest mutagenic potency of the organic matter associated to organic extractspresent in TSP. |
