Summary:With the aim to get an adequate endodontic treatment, the precise knowledge of the internal morphology of the root canal at different levels would be of great help for the clinician. The aim of the present work was to determine the shape of the root canal from 540 horizontal slices at different levels (apical, medial and cervical) of mesial and distal roots of first and second inferior molars. The largest and smaller diameter was determined under stereoscopic microscopy. From the proportion of the diameters, the shape of the canals was described as circular, oval or elongated. It was found that at the cervical level the shape is mainly oval or elongated, but the oval and circular shapes tends to predominate at apical level. From the measures at the apical level of the Distal conduct it is suggested the minimal use of lime number 35, of number 30 for the MB and of 25 for the ML conduct. However, it is suggested to emphasize the instrumentation of the canal towards the buccal and lingual walls when debridating the conduct; also, the use of irrigating solutions in order to get a better prognostic of endodontic treatment.
