Sumario:The monopoly that the Guatemalan State had over the cane spirit commercialization was fundamental for its support during the first years of his republican life. This article analyzes the effects that this political state had in a Mam community of the Huehueteco “altiplano”, that was sugar cane producer; this situation caused significant changes in its ethnic composition and in its socio-economic and territorial constitution.
