Monthly trends of the gonadosomatic index, the percentage of individuals with ripe gonads, and mean oocyte diameter indicate that this species reproduces in the period from April to June (spring). This reproduction period is also supported by the microscopic characteristics of gonads (highest percentage of oocytes in advanced vitellogenesis phase and high concentration of spermatozoa in lobular lumen and testis main duct). Total length (TL) ranged from 26.0 to 102.8 cm, with a mean of 53.3 cm. Mean maturation lengths calculated for females and males were 59.3 and 56.4 cm TL, respectively. Most individuals caught had a length which was smaller than the mean maturation length indicating that the fishery is based mostly on juvenile fish. Se tomaron muestras mensuales de sierra Scomberomorus sierra durante nueve años (1998–2000 y 2002–2007) con redes de enmalle en la Bahía de Navidad, Jalisco (México). La proporción de sexos de S. sierra no presentó diferencias significativas (H:M, 1:0.9) durante el periodo de estudio. Las tendencias mensuales del índice gonadosomático, de los porcentajes de organismos con gónadas maduras y del diámetro promedio de los ovocitos indican que la sierra se reproduce en los meses de abril a junio (primavera). Este periodo de reproducción también se sustenta con las observaciones de las características microscópicas que presentaron las gónadas en esta época (mayor porcentaje de ovocitos en fase de vitelogénesis avanzada y alta concentración de espermatozoides en el lumen lobular y conducto principal del testículo). La longitud total (LT) osciló de 26.0 a 102.8 cm y el promedio fue de 53.3 cm. Las tallas promedio de maduración calculadas para hembras y machos fueron de 59.3 y 56.4 cm LT, respectivamente.
