Ironically, at the same time he documented some of his explorations with an unusual precisión for the day, leaving behind a valuable record for archaeology. Aymé's foray into México created a blueprint for subsequent American Consuls from which to usurp their diplomatic positions in the name of archaeological exploration. In this sense the Consuls actions contributed substantially to fuel the air of suspicion that existed between the Mexican government and foreigners who were involved in archaeological enterprises, resulting in the stiffening of measures that controlled exploration.Louis H. Aymé, se desempeñó a principios de la época porfiriana como cónsul de los Estados Unidos en Mérida, Yucatán. Durante su estadía en México, llevó a cabo excavaciones arqueológicas ilegales y traficó antigüedades precolombinas a museos de los Estados Unidos. La evidencia de estas afirmaciones se encuentra en documentos escritos por el propio Aymé, que demuestran cómo utilizó sobornos y engaños para sacar del país grandes cantidades de material arqueológico. Irónicamente, al mismo tiempo el cónsul documentó algunas de sus exploraciones con una precisión sorprendente para la época, dejando así un registro valioso para la arqueología contemporánea. Su conducta en México sentó las bases para el comportamiento de los siguientes cónsules estadounidenses, quienes repitieron su mal ejemplo de valerse del cargo diplomático para el saqueo de piezas arqueológicas.
