The values of pH obtained (measured at 25ºC) ranged from 7.6 near the coastline (in the centre of the upwelling) to 8.3 at the western boundary of the study area (close to the oceanic environment); pH values were more uniform away from the influence of upwelling. Variations in the pH, temperature and chlorophyll a were all approximately in phase. In particular, higher pH values –indicative of photosynthetic activity– were well correlated with the chlorophyll a measurements. These results illustrate the need to consider both small and mesoscale processes when investigating carbon dioxide exchange across the air-sea interface in such systems, and also show that spectrophotometric pH measurements are sufficiently sensitive (and can be measured sufficiently rapidly) to describe various biogeochemical processes in such systems.Este trabajo muestra el uso de medidas espectrofotométricas de pH realizadas de forma continua y automatizadas como parte de una serie de medidas (conjuntamente en continuo, la salinidad, temperatura y algunos datos discretos de clorofila a) en el área de afloramiento de la Corriente de California. Los valores obtenidos de pH (medidos a 25ºC) oscilaron entre 7.6 cerca de la línea de costa (en el centro del afloramiento) y 8.3 en la frontera más oeste del área estudiada (cerca del ambiente oceánico); los valores de pH fueron más uniformes lejos de la zona de influencia del afloramiento. Las variaciones en pH, temperatura y clorofila a estuvieron aproximadamente en fase conjuntamente. En particular, los valores mayores de pH –indicativos de actividad fotosintética– mostraron buena correlación con las medidas de clorofila a.
