The volcano-tectonic relationship since the beginning of the evolution of the FVM and the possible origin and characteristics of its basement, in the light of the subsurface information obtained through geothermal well exploration, the general geology and both surface and subsurface data, are discussed in this paper. The correlation and position of the belt with respect to the Sierra Madre Occidental are analyzed, concluding that the basement of th.e first one is different from that of the second.As a result of our studies and from the geothermal point of view the FVM province is subdivided and classified in 1 O sectors.Finally, the association of the geothermal potential with the recent volcano-tectonic activity and the shallow magmatic chambers is also described.La integración de los trabajos geológicos realizados en la Faja Volcánica Mexicana (FVM) denominación adoptada en este trabajo para el Eje Neovolcánico - se ha efectuado con el fin de analizar las características e interpretaciones geológicas que sobre esta provincia se han hecho, así como proporcionar una visión más amplia de los aspectos geotérmicos involucrados en ella. Se presenta una discusión sobre la relación vulcano-tectónica ocurrida desde el inicio del desarrollo de la FVM y el posible origen y características de su basamento, apoyándose en la información de subsuelo dada por los pozos geotérmicos, la geología regional y dataciones tanto de subsuelo como superficiales. Se analiza, además, la correlación y posición de la Faja con respecto a la Sierra Madre Occidental, concluyéndose que el basamento de aquélla es diferente de ésta. Como resultado de lo anterior, y desde un punto de vista geotérmico, se subdivide y jerarquiza en 10 sectores la provincia de la FVM. Finalmente se describe la asociación del potencial geotérmico presente con la actividad vulcano-tectónica reciente, así como con las cámaras magmáticas someras.Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
