Sumario:The author reviews several conceptual proposals concerning the term "liberalism" in the light of international and national experience, and analyzes the concepts of neoliberals and Mexican social liberalism, using the latter as a definition of the modernizing strategy employed by former president Salinas de Gortari, in an attempt to deal simultaneously with aspects of the economy's efficiency and social equity. In short, he analyzes and explains the scope, meaning and limitations of Mexican social liberalism.
