Descripción
Sumario:This article has the main objective of discussing the existence of a relationship between the growth of tourism activities and the human development within communities considered as tourist destinations. Thus, information related to the Human Development Index (HDI) and tourism dynamics was collected related to the destinations considered priority for the Mexican Tourism Secretariat since the year 2012. The central hypothesis of this study was that considering the benefits produced by tourism development in these communities, human development levels should present a similar positive panorama. Obtained results, however, point out toward a completely different reality generating a number of questions about the role of tourism as a real agent for development. The information in this article can be useful to further investigate those factors that determine the distribution of costs and benefits of tourism in these communities.
