In this article the author uses early colonial period vocabularies to identify the words used by the pre-Hispanic Nahuas and Otomis to express concepts related to their social structures. These terms are analyzed and compared, in order to understand how these groups spoke about their society, and to determine the degree of similarity between their respective semantic fields. The results of this analysis indicate that both groups conceptualized their social structures in essentially the same way, from the basic family unit to the most complex structures, such as the confederations of kingdoms. Una herramienta para construir una comprensión más profunda de las culturas prehispánicas de Mesoamérica es el análisis de las palabras que usaban para expresar diversos aspectos de su cultura. En el presente trabajo el autor aprovecha los vocabularios del periodo Novohispano Temprano para identificar las voces que usaban los antiguos nahuas y otomíes para expresar conceptos relacionados con sus estructuras sociales. Estos términos son analizados y comparados, con el propósito de entender cómo estos grupos lingüísticos hablaban acerca de su sociedad, y de averiguar el grado de similitud de sus campos semánticos. Los resultados de este análisis indican que ambos grupos compartían, en lo general, una misma manera de concebir las estructuras de su sociedad, desde el núcleo básico de la familia hasta las agrupaciones más complejas, las confederaciones de señoríos.
