Sumario:Mexico produces approximately 14.4 x 10(6) tons of tomato stubble per year (RT) most of it being discarded. This study evaluated the production of P. pulmonarius (IE-4) and P. ostreatus (IE-8), by solid state fermentation (FS) of RT in combination with vineyard prunings (MV) or wheat straw (PT); mixtures were: RT (1:0), RT-MV (1:1) and RT-PT (1:1). Biological efficiency (EB), production rate (TP), yield (R) and chemical changes in the substrate after harvesting were determined. EB varied from 92.0 to 139.8 %, with the highest value in RT (IE-4); TP from 1.4 to 2.9% and R from 6.4 to 9.8%. Bioconversion oscillated between 57.7 and 63.9 %, with the highest value in RT-PT (IE-8). Substrate crude protein and total fat contents decreased significantly in all treatment, after FS with Pleurotus, except RT-PT (IE-4), in which fat concentration was similar to controls. Ash content ranged from 10.7 to 18.2 % and the C:N ratio increased between 11.4 and 32.4 %, compared to controls. RT showed potencial as a lignocellulosic source for Pleurotus spp. cultivation.
