| Sumario: | The municipality of Malinalco has been characterized by its great diversity of agricultural landscapes. In this century, there have been important socioeconomic transformations that have caused both the loss of agricultural spaces and their productive transformation. For example, growing residential tourism and new trends in agricultural production have led to the loss or transformation of agricultural areas around the main population centers and to the disappearance of orchards. This researchaimed to determine the changes in the agricultural land cover in the municipality of Malinalco that occurred between 1995 and 2022, as well as to explain these changes according to local producers’ perceptions. A mixed methodological approach was used, based on cartographic analysis and the conduction and analysis of in-depth interviews. The stagnation of corn production inboth irrigated and rainfed areas, the notable loss of home gardens, the incipient emergence of protected agriculture, and the substantial growth in avocado and mezcalero agave cultivation stand out among the main findings. The analysis of the compiled textual data reflects that, for agricultural producers, the transformations that are occurring in the area and at the productive levelplace them in conditions of social, economic and environmental fragility. |
