Descripción
Sumario:A study of the history of Spanish publishing focusing on the publishing houses has yet to be carriedout. This paper examines the contributions to Spanish culture of the Editorial Gallach, one of the pioneer publishing enterprises in Barcelona, which began operations near the end of the nineteenth century. A considerable portion of its catalogue has been reassembled by locating books it published in the National Library of Spain, the National Library of Catalonia, the Ateneo of Madrid and the Ateneo of Barcelona. Researchers also assessed the influences of this publishing house and that of its founder José Gallach Torras, specifically with regard to the founding and growth of the prestigious Calpe publishers, which in turn gave rise to Espasa-Calpe, Spain’s oldest publishing company whose ongoing operations date to 1860.
