Descripción
Sumario:Wealth inequality is a problem of historical dimensions in Mexico, which has characterized the country for centuries. This research note introduces a study designed to improve our understanding of contemporary inequalities by analyzing wealth accumulation strategies from the past. Concretely, the study aims to examine the role of matrimonial alliances in the reproduction of inequalities in the 19th Century. To this end, it focuses on a mechanism of intergenerational wealth transfer broadly applied in independent Mexico that contributed to the formation and consolidation of elites: the institution of the dowry. Together with Diego Castañeda Garza we will explore endogamic practices among pre-revolutionary elites and their consequences for wealth concentration in Mexico, focusing particularly on the role and status of women.
