Sumario:Mexico is a country with a great cultural and linguistic richness. Despite numerous attempts to homogenize Mexican society, eleven language families are officially recognized today, with 68 language groups and the number of variants far exceeds this figure: 364.1 According to data from the 2010 National Census of Population and Housing, 2 695 228 people aged five and over speak an indigenous language (6.5 % of the total population over five years). According to the law, the languages spoken by these people are recognized as national languages, but in reality their use for official purposes is extremely limited.
