For that reason, a great number of definitions and explanatory typologies have been developed, from different theoretical perspectives, in an attempt to identify the scope and limits of migration. This article proposes that as a consequence of the interest in population movements, a "theoretical crisis" has arisen. In order to sustain that claim, the author presents the positions stated by the most distinguished writers of different disciplines and ideological currents, and points out the manifestation of problems of basic definitions and the terminology employed, as well as the efforts being made at patterns of population movements. As a general conclusion, the author indicates the need to find clear analytical dimensions for organizing the classification of the types of migration and explaining their origins.El objeto de estudio de la teoría de la migración ha sido –desde el siglo pasado– de interés creciente para las más diversas disciplinas sociales. Por tal motivo, se han elaborado, desde diversas perspectivas teóricas, un gran número de definiciones y tipologías explicatorias que tratan de definir los alcances y límites de la migración. Este artículo plantea que como consecuencia del interés por los movimientos poblacionales se ha producido una “crisis teórica”. Para sustentar esta afirmación se presentan los argumentos de los autores más destacados de diferentes disciplinas y corrientes ideológicas, y se señala la manifestación de los problemas de las definiciones básicas y la terminología empleada, así como los esfuerzos que se desarrollan actualmente para lograr el diseño de modelos explicativos que cubran los diversos patrones de los movimientos poblacionales.
