Material and methods: action participatory and qualitative research that was conducted between February and July 2010 in 50 students of the sixth semester of General Practitioner in the Faculty of Medicine of the São Camilo University Center in São Paulo, Brazil. Results: there were identified four main themes represented in personal phrases or texts which called the students attention: 1) The Need to combine technical and humanist expertise. 2) Parallels with real life. 3) Difficult situations clarification. 4) The Opportunity to reflect about pain, suffering and death. Conclusions: reflection about literary narratives teach us about compassion and empathy, essential qualities for a good medical practitioner and also to realize that sometimes patients do not require complex interventions, but simple actions taken by good will physicians.Objetivo: demostrar los beneficios de incluir la lectura y reflexión de la obra La muerte de Iván Ilitch de Tolstoi en estudiantes de Medicina que inician sus actividades clínicas. Material y métodos: investigación cualitatitiva de tipo acción participativa; se realizó entre febrero y julio de 2010, en 50 estudiantes de sexto semestre de la Carrera de Médico Cirujano de la Facultad de Medicina del Centro Universitario São Camilo, São Paulo, Brasil. Resultados: se identificaron cuatro ejes temáticos representados con frases personales o textos que atrajeron la atención de los estudiantes: 1) Necesidad de combinar los conocimientos técnicos y humanísticos. 2) Paralelismos con la vida real. 3) La clarificación de las situaciones difíciles. 4) Oportunidad de reflexionar sobre el dolor, el sufrimiento y la muerte.
