However, they were still relevant in Indian society and government and deserve to be carefully studied. This work is about the public life of Luis de Castilleja y Puruata, the great grand-son of the last “natural lord” of Michoacán, who dominated the public life of Pátzcuaro during the early 17th century. The author holds that his authority was never completely stable because he could not be supported by old lineage loyalties and instead depended on relations with the various towns, districts and corporations that comprised the Indian “republic”.Los nobles indígenas de la época temprana de Nueva España han atraído la atención de los historiadores. No obstante, el interés disminuye cuando aparecen los descendientes de estos personajes que perdieron poco a poco sus bienes, prerrogativas y privilegios. Pese a todo, siguen siendo relevantes en la sociedad y el gobierno indígenas y merecen ser estudiados con detenimiento. En este trabajo se aborda la vida pública de Luis de Castilleja y Puruata, un bisnieto del último señor natural de Michoacán que dominó la vida política de Pátzcuaro durante las primeras décadas del siglo XVII.
