| Sumario: | Introduction: The literature reports difficulties to carry out some assessment-related processes among the nursing staff. Regarding selfcare, the Orem Model is a useful tool to help nurses perform the corresponding assessment, detect deficits, and make sure selfcare is properly carried out. Objective: To design and validate a nursing assessment guide based on the Theory of Orem for persons living with AIDS. Methodology: The study was developed in four stages: In the first, the assessment guide was designed. During the second and third stages, the content validity was tested by a panel of experts. In the fourth stage, a pilot study with 12 assistant nurses was used to perform an analysis of reliability. Aiken’s V coefficient was used to test the degree of agreement among the experts. Cronbach Alpha and Spearman Rho were calculated to determine the test re-test reliability. Results: A content validity with Aiken’s V values over 0.90 was found in all categories. A total item to item validation agreement among the experts was found. Cronbach’s Alpha turned out to be 0.54. A Spearman’s Rho of 0.93 evidenced a positive correlation in the test re-test analysis. Discussion: The nursing model used yielded improvements in the nursing observation process. Conclusions: The validated guide shows the practical application of the Theory of Orem and represents a contribution to the nursing assessment process to persons living with AIDS. |
