The aim of this paper is to compare two current views on the pragmatics of irony; and to assess them with regard to their predictions about the cognitive capacities required for handling verbal irony. I conclude that relevance theory is the most adequate framework to approach non-literal language. First; relevance theory allows precise predictions as to the development of the ability to engage in figurative language in childhood and the relation of this with the development of other more general cognitive abilities; such as the capacity to attribute to others mental states which are different from one's own (usually referred to as the possession of a ("theory of mind"). Second; relevance theory explains why the ability to engage in figurative language and verbal humour is impaired in autistic subjects. An account of irony in terms of indirect negation; on the other hand; leads to wrong predictions about its workings.Existe una amplia gama de explicaciones teóricas sobre la naturaleza del lenguaje figurado. Cada una de estas posturas tiene consecuencias diferentes en cuanto al procesamiento psicolingüístico del lenguaje no literal. Este artículo compara dos acercamientos pragmáticos a la ironía (la ironía vista como una variedad de discurso ecoico y la ironía concebida como una forma de negación indirecta); y los evalúa respecto a sus predicciones sobre las capacidades cognoscitivas que se requieren para el manejo de la ironía verbal. El análisis concluye que el tratamiento del lenguaje figurado que se propone dentro de la teoría de la relevancia (la ironía como uso ecoico) es el más adecuado para explicar su funcionamiento. Una de las razones para ello es que este enfoque permite explicar por qué el uso del lenguaje figurado es una habilidad que se desarrolla paralelamente al surgimiento de otras capacidades cognoscitivas en la infancia; tales como la de atribuir a terceras personas estados mentales diferentes a los propios; la cual se conoce como la posesión de una "teoría de la mente". Otra razón es que el acercamiento al lenguaje figurado dentro del marco de la teoría de la relevancia también hace posible entender las causas que limitan la producción y comprensión del lenguaje no literal y el discurso humorístico en los sujetos autistas.
