| Summary: | This paper deals with an empirical approach to an understudied area that refers to the sexuality of women with breast cancer. It is assumed that the image and conceptualization of the management of body and sexuality, especially in women who grow up and live in rural and semi-rural environments, is associated with traditional ideas about being a woman; according to which the exercise of sexuality is considered a sin, which implies that it is not recognized as a dimension of human development and that it forms part of people's quality of life. The study is descriptive and cross-sectional. It was applied to 120 women diagnosed with some type of breast cancer and they are patients of the Nayarit State Cancer Centre. The instrument applied was EORT-C30, which assesses quality of life, and QLQ-BR23 which explores body image, functioning and sexual enjoyment and with a future perspective. One of the most important results is that sexuality is an issue avoided, both by the patients and therapists and by the medical sector of Oncology. Myths and taboos persist regarding sexuality and motherhood; they consider this area as unimportant and the conjugal relationship causes stress, anxiety and worry, aspects that are added to the fight for cancer survival. Therefore, psychooncological care should focus on these aspects with ethics to improve the quality of life. |
