Owners of an Enlightenment vision about life, present and future, the cognitive distance that Chilean workers woven in relation to the death in the early twentieth century didn’t allow them to anticipate the complex and contradictory social universe that the modernization involved. Characterized by violent death, severe pain and moral in-justice, the slaughter perpetrated in 1907 turned this educational institution in historic cleaving to the advent of contemporary political massacres and in a symbol of the contradictions that constitute modernity and modernization processes in the twentieth century.Este artículo tiene por propósito analizar algunas problemáticas subjetivas que permitan comprender por qué la matanza de trabajadores en la Escuela Domingo Santa María de Iquique, constituye uno de los hitos que inaugura una nueva época sobre la naturaleza del dolor y el horror en el Chile contemporáneo. Propietarios de una visión iluminista sobre la vida, el presente y futuro, la distancia cognitiva que tejieron los obreros chilenos para con la muerte en los inicios del siglo XX posibilitó que no fueran capaces de anticipar el complejo y contradictorio universo social que los procesos de modernización pueden traer consigo.
