| Sumario: | In this thesis we show the experimental investigation of self-starting operation in a figure eight fiber laser based on a symmetrical Nonlinear Optical Loop Mirror (NOLM). We show the theory and experimental analyze of the NOLM with a symmetrical coupler, highly twisted low-birefringence fiber and a Quarter-Wave Retarder (QWR) inserted asymmetrically in the fiber loop. The quarter wave retarder generates an asymmetry in polarization which originates that the beams counter propagating in loop fiber have a differential phase due to Cross-Phase Modulation (XPM). In the nonlinear operation when we select in the NOLM output the polarization component orthogonal to the input polarization the transmission have an initial value that depend on the position of quarter wave retarder. The transmission analysis for low powers shows the dependence on rotation of the quarter wave retarder, thus we can adjust the transmission of a versatile form. The low-power transmission can be adjusted by the birefringence and the twist at the NOLMoutput arms. We show a precise, clear and reproduced procedure for the mode-locking self-starting generation in a figure eight fiber laser. The procedure is straightforward and we need to adjust only the quarter wave retarder, after that we increase the pump power about 70 mW to get the self-starting of the pulses. Finally, the laser is capable of generating stables pulses with a repetition frequency about 0.8 MHz and 30 ps Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of the autocorrelation function approximately with milliwatts of average output power.
