The article aims to portray how these women equate sex work with any other work activity, which differentiates economic activities from private life. However, there is a conflict between the two spaces, causing a contradiction between the public discourse of sex work and the way it is experienced on the private dimension. It intends to show that despite this contradictory relationship, sex workers have established ways to obtain benefits and negotiate the borders between the work sphere and the personal one. It thus contributes to the ever-controversial, unfinished discussion about the recognition of sex work and how people involved experience it. Este artículo estudia los argumentos que las dirigentes de las asociaciones de trabajo sexual femenino en Quito exponen para justificar su actividad como merecedora de garantías políticas, económicas y sociales. Este texto es resultado de la elaboración y análisis de historias de vida sobre cinco dirigentes del trabajo sexual, además de una etnografía de sus prácticas políticas y su capital social. El artículo tiene como objetivo mostrar cómo estas mujeres equiparan el trabajo sexual con cualquier otra actividad laboral, la cual diferencia las actividades económicas de la vida privada. Sin embargo, ambos espacios —vida laboral y vida privada— entran en conflicto, provocando una contradicción entre el discurso público del trabajo sexual y la forma como se vive en el plano privado. Se pretende mostrar que, a pesar de esta relación contradictoria, las trabajadoras sexuales establecen formas para obtener beneficios y negociar las fronteras entre lo laboral y personal. Lo anterior abona a una discusión siempre polémica e inconclusa alrededor del reconocimiento del trabajo sexual y la forma en cómo es experimentado.
