Sumario:The sustainability of agricultural systems depends on territorial planning based on the suitability of the target crop (Land Suitability Analysis, LSA). In Quintana Roo, Mexico, commercial rainfed production of jalapeño pepper (Capsicum annum L.) has decline over the past decade, even though the region offers favorable agroclimatic conditions for production during periods of lower competition in the national market. The objective of this study was to identify areas with the highest ecological suitability for sustainable production, using a methodology that integrates landscape units as a cartographic base and multicriteria evaluation (MCE) as a decision-making tool. Soil and climatic variables were considered within ecological framework. The results show that 19.0 % of the state’s territory is suitable for cultivation without compromising natural vegetation through land-use change. The maps indicate levels of suitability and sensitivity for landscape units at a 1:20000 scale, providing valuable information for local agricultural territorial planning.
