Sumario:Obesity and overweight are defined as “an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that can be detrimental to health”. In Mexico, the prevalence of obesity and overweight both in children and adults has increased in the last three decades and this has caused Mexico to currently be one of the countries with the highest prevalence of obesity in the world. Objective: To determine the self-care capacity of nursing students to reduce obesity levels. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out, applying a quantitative instrument to 43 students from the 3rd to 6th semester of the degree course of a public university in the State of Hidalgo in order to know their eating/exercise habits and knowledge of self-care. Results: 21% of the population has a BMI indicative of overweight while 14% have some type of obesity. 46.5% eat at least 3 meals a day, of which 27.9% are fast food and 58.1% reported eating cereal or a sandwich. In addition, 62.8% indicate not doing any physical activity. Conclusions: 97.7% of the students know self-care and take into account the series of elements that this implies, but despite knowing these factors, the study reflects the presence of overweight and obesity as well as unhealthy behaviors in the student community.
