description Maguey (Agave salmiana var. salmiana) is a plant of Mexican origin from which various dishes and beverages are made. In addition, it has medicinal properties and contributes to nutrient fixation and soil water retention. In the case of the community of San Mateo Tlajomulco in the state of Hidalgo, the cultivation of this plant has been displaced by other more profitable economic activities. Nevertheless, residents resist its disappearance by employing various strategies to manage and conserve the species. The general objective of this study was to describe the sociocultural techniques through which this crop is propagated and preserved in the aforementioned community to prevent the disappearance of the inhabitants’ traditional knowledge. Since the information was obtained from fieldwork conducted directly with the local people, the research approach was qualitative, and the ethnographic method primarily employed participant observation and open interviews, which, under the tenets of symbolic interactionism, allowed for the direct interpretation of the informants’ words. Finally, it is concluded that in the locality, there is no written information regarding the cultural techniques used for the preservation of the plant and that its rescue through oral tradition will allow the implementation of sustainable harvesting practices, safeguarding the biocultural heritage of peasant communities, and revaluing their knowledge concerning the ancestral benefits of maguey.
