While the criteria for establishing marriage legitimacy cannot be understood without precise knowledge of local normative systems, they can be analyzed from a more general anthropologic perspective, as a total social fact, through analytical categories such as gift, marriage transaction, and dowry.Este artículo trata sobre la alianza matrimonial en el pueblo de Yalálag, en la Sierra Norte de Oaxaca. Por una parte, se observan las transfor- maciones de las normas y prácticas matrimoniales a lo largo del siglo xx. Por otro lado, se examinan las categorías locales gozona y fandango, empleadas para describir cómo se establece la alianza y que designan las fuentes de legitimidad del matrimonio.
